Let's get metaphysical...metaphysical... @ 09:48 am

godfish:
Okay, so now, based on Dalton's musings on metaphysics in the "historical trends, I'm looking at how metaphysics here might work.  Dalton's idea was that, under some theory or other (the description of which would most likely involve the word "quantum"), reality's rules can be altered drastically by the perception of individuals and groups.  This is also, for lack of a better term, infectious.  For instance, as Dalton pointed out, if Steve believes strongly in magic, his neighbor Jim, who studies occult traditions strictly as an academic, may be able to cast spells he knows academically, even though he personally might not believe that's how reality is supposed to work.  I'm not sure this is the way I want to go, but it does have its attractive points, such as giving a metaphysical rationale as to the reason that the secondary races are eventually able to overthrow the yoke of the technologically and mystically superior progenitor race.

I will ruminate more on this a bit later, in the comments.

I've given this a bit more thought. Dalton's suggestion might make a really good sort of subtextual rationale for all the comic book weirdness. The thing is, I wouldn't want it to be something that ever came out directly (or even indirectly, really). The best way to use such a thing is to keep it in the background and make it seem like other metaphysical systems apply, and every once in a while the rules seem to change for no explicit reason, and eventually (in the far-flung future perhaps) the real rules come out.

The consensual reality thing was already over-done in WW, and a fictional setting is already arbitrary. I would find it annoying if reality was subject to polls.

This is not quite consensual reality, but it is close. According to the theory, only certain people's beliefs actually alter the way the world functions. Thus, it's not really a poll...it's more like the Nielsen ratings for TV...you never know exactly whose opinion matters, and it may be someone whose opinion should matter the least. Thus, a really cool idea might never become reality because the person who came up with it isn't a "Nielsen" level mind/spirit/soul.

I share your reluctance to consensual reality, and would probably prefer to go in a different direction if I think of one, but I've been sort of stuck lately as to how to handle all the comic book weirdness.

For future reference, because I like it, this version of metaphysics will be referred to as "Nielsen" metaphysics.
