Prehistory

(Link)
If you use Atlantis, include an explanation of why no geological or geographical trace of it can be discovered using nonsuper science. It would be an interesting source of sleek crystal-powered arcane psionic technology artifacts. You know, the kind that can accidentally transfer your mind into an ancient mecha made of alchemical alloys. The prehistory stuff could be the ultimate source of superpowers in later history.

Atlantis? What, no mention of Lemuria, Mu, Great Zimbabwe, or Ultima Thule? I am disappointed in you, sir!

Actually that sounds like a possible tie-in. You know my personal penchant for weird notions of protohistory and ahistorical prognostications. My only concern would be that unless I spin it just right, I could consistentize (new word, TM) myself out of a lot of interesting stories and genres. But it is definitely something to explore as we mush our way into this.

I'm just sayin', IF you use Atlantis, do it right. I say no to Lemuria, an entirely theoretical continent. Mu is fractionally acceptable, Ultima Thule okay, and Kush is fair game, as are Agartha and Shamballah.

Bless your shiny metal head!

OK, if you take legends as truth, super powers seem to come in waves: ancient gods and heroes, shining magical knights and monsters in the Middle Ages, the current surge that really started picking up in the 1930s (entering comic book 'history'). Is some aperiodic mechanism or phenomenon responsible? Do powers disappear in the quiet periods or just become rare...or just go underground?

I think this deserves its own thread, as it is a pretty central concern...I'll start one...
